Pumpkin - Burgess Buttercup

OP. Sometimes accidents create the best outcomes, as is the case with this delightful pumpkin. The original buttercup pumpkin was an unintentional cross that appeared in the trial garden at North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station in 1925. Found amongst the variety Quality pumpkin it was later determined that a cross had been made between “Quality” and “Essex Hybrid” pumpkins. North Dakota Ag Station had been working on developing a pumpkin to replace sweet potatoes as they had not had success growing this crop in their state. The researchers we so delighted with the flavour and texture of the original cross, they abandoned the other varieties they had been working on and focussed soley on the Burgess Buttercup. A prolific producer of nice sized green skinned fruit with orange flesh weighing 1.5-2 Kg.  The late seedsmith Alan Kapuler, is quoted saying, “If you pick only one squash to grow this is it.” With a smooth texture, a perfect amount of sweetness, it can be used for any dish for dinner or dessert.

Sow into trays in early September as this a long season pumpkin. Prick out to 4cm diagonal spacing when true leaves appear. Transplant into fertile soil at 50cm diagonal spacing when chance of frost has passed.
