Pea - Giant Alderman

NZH. The wild pea grew in the Mediterranean Basin and the Near East. During the dawn of agriculture in the Neolithic period some 11,700 years ago, peas were selected for larger sizes and greater yields. It was in England where they first started to distinguish garden peas from field peas in the 17th century. And this is an old English heirloom bred from the variety “Telephone” by Thomas Laxton in 1891. It arrived on these shores with the first English settlers. It became very popular in America in the 1900’s and is regarded as an American heirloom and favourite there as well. Loved for its prolific crops when picked regularly, of shell-out pods containing 8-10 juicy peas. Requires a sturdy trellis as plants can reach 2m in height.

Sow in early Spring and Autumn for two crops per season. Sow into trays and transplant into garden at 5cm spacing in rows 30cm apart or direct sow at the same spacing. A goo strong trellis will really help this tall plant.
