Tomato - Golden Bell

OP Gifted to us by Mark Christensen of the Heritage Food Crops Research Trust as one of the confirmed “tomato stars” in their studies to analyse and catalogue tomatoes that prove in the lab to hold high levels of Tetra-cis-lycopene. This highly beneficial bioavailable form of lycopene which can help prevent cancer, exhibits as a golden-orange or tangerine colour in the fruit of the tomato. Golden Bell has an unusual history compared to our other seeds as in, it is a quite recently developed variety. Mark was sent the seeds from Lesley Craig. She shared at the time of sending in 2020 that this tomato appeared in her garden! She was given a beefsteak tomato by the name of Beachmans (Coromandle variety) and when she grew it out near her Oxheart tomato and a small orange tomato it seemed crossed. One of the plants did not produce a beefsteak but instead an orange oxheart shaped tomato. Mark has named it Golden Bell, and all the seeds we grew out produced true to type. As it is a relatively new variety, we want to warn customers there may be some genetic throw back to its parent lines. although neither Mark or us has seen this. Please let us know if you encounter off types. It takes on average of 7-12 years to stabilise a hybrid into an open pollinated line, plant breeding at its finest!  A nice sized bright orange bell-shaped tomato. Indeterminate.

Sow in August into trays in a glasshouse. Keep soil temp above 18°C for ideal germination. Prick out when true leaves appear to 2.5cm diagonal spacing. Transplant after last frost to 40cm diagonal spacing into fertile ground in direct sun. Stake and de-lateral as needed.
