One of the best all-purpose companion plants for most vegetables.
NZH Beautiful orange flowers also known as old fashioned ‘Pot’ marigold. One of the best all-purpose companion plants for most vegetables. In the garden, they attract hover flies and bees for pollination and can also be used as a “catch crop” for aphids keeping them off other food crops. The petals are highly medicinal, more so than other colours of calendula and are preferred for the use in salves and lotions as a skin soother. When taken internally the petals are said to be cleansing and detoxifying. We make a tea with ginger and calendula to soothe the stomach or use the petals to brighten up our salads. Annual, height to 50cm and frost hardy.
Sow in Spring or Late Summer for continuous colour in the garden. Direct scatter sow in borders and rows, or sow into trays and prick out to 4cm diagonal spacing when true leaves appear. Transplant out to 30cm diagonal spacing in fertile soil.
